How to Shut Off Your Main Water Valve in an Emergency

If you are standing in water right now, do not panic. Locate your Main Water Valve and follow these steps immediately to stop the flow and protect your home.

STEP 1: Locate the Valve

In most Denver and Englewood homes, your main water shut-off is located on the inside of the wall facing the street. Look in these common spots:

  • The Basement or Crawlspace: Usually near the front of the house, where the main pipe comes through the foundation.

  • Near the Water Heater: Sometimes the main line enters near your utility closet.

  • Mechanical Room: If you have a dedicated room for your furnace and heater.

  • City Shutoff: If you can’t find your main shutoff in the house, go to the street and look for the city meter shutoff:

STEP 2: Relieve the Pressure

Once the valve is closed, go to the lowest level of your house (like a basement utility sink) and turn on the cold water. This drains the “stored” water still sitting in your pipes, stopping the “drip-drip” from the leak faster.
